Air Force 1st Lt. Nicholas J. Battle has been decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal for participating in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is the son of Billie B. Wright of Yelm.

Army National Guard Pvt. Candice F. Spaulding has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Spaulding is the daughter of Jennifer Thompson of Tumwater.

Army Sgt. Stephen R. Bundy participated in the 34th U.S. Army Annual Culinary Arts Competition at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va. He is the son of Karen Y. Altajer of Seattle and Richard D. Bundy of Lacey.

Army Pvt. Jesse Garcia has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Anna Garcia of Lacey.

Air Force Airman Christopher A. Aguilera graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Aguilera is a 2008 graduate of River Ridge High School.


Melissa Montgomery, Washington State Department of Natural Resources manager of the Derelict Vessel Removal Program, received a Meritorious Public Service Award from the U.S. Coast Guard for continuously exhibiting outstanding commitment to keeping Washington’s waters safe and clean.

Artist Mark W. Lubich of Olympia has received two Special Recognition Merit Awards for his artwork in the Summer All Media Juried Online International Art Exhibition, hosted by Upstream People Gallery.


Pat Durham of Olympia recently concluded her yearlong term as grand madam president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles organization. Durham was honored at the Eagles’ International Grand Convention in Reno, Nev., recently, celebrating her accomplishments as leader of the ladies’ auxiliary.
