A fire destroyed a detached garage and single apartment in the 21000 block of Old Highway 99 on Friday afternoon.
A diesel space heater malfunctioned, shooting flames upward and sideways that quickly engulfed the overhanging carport, Arellano said. About 30 firefighters from five fire districts arrived to battle the blaze about 2:10 p.m., Thurston County Fire District 1 Battalion Chief Ken Carlson said.
One firefighter from the Riverside Fire Authority in Lewis County suffered an ankle injury and was taken to a hospital, Carlson said, adding that he still was evaluating the monetary loss from the fire.
An apartment above the garage where a man lived was destroyed, and several vehicles and motorcycles in the garage were damaged , he said.

The home was not damaged, but several thousand dollars worth of tools and engine parts were destroyed.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” said Arellano, a millwright who was laid off last December. He said he has been doing car repairs to support his wife, two daughters, son and grandchildren.
