MLK DAY activities

Donations sought: Volunteers are sought Monday to help collect donations of food for the Thurston County Food Bank and nonfood items (hygiene, toiletry, cleaning, paper products, etc.) for the Other Bank.

People can sign up to collect donations at local grocery stores from noon to 2 p.m. or 3 to 5 p.m. Volunteers will be asked (if possible) to pick up their empty collection boxes at the Food Bank before their shift and to return them full. For more information, call 360-956-0235.

Activities: Several activities have been organized to celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., whose birthday will be celebrated Monday as a federal holiday. A meditative walk organized by the South Sound Buddhist Peace Fellowship has been scheduled for noon to 1:30 p.m. today at Marathon Park at Capitol Lake. Participants are asked not to bring signs or rally during this silent meditation.

AmeriCorps is sponsoring seven service projects Monday morning. For more information, call 360-943-0780, ext. 161.

Celebration: Singers, dancers, musicians and others will celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. at a free community event that starts at 4 p.m. Monday at The Washington Center for the Performing Arts, 512 Washington St. S.E., Olympia.
