Officer who shot, killed Clemmons won’t be charged

SEATTLE - King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg says the Seattle officer who fatally shot Maurice Clemmons will not be charged.

Satterberg says Officer Benjamin Kelly was correct in recognizing Maurice Clemmons as a danger and did his duty in using deadly force.

The announcement Tuesday follows a King County inquest jury decision last week that cleared Kelly of questions about the shooting.

He shot Clemmons in a confrontation Dec. 1, two days after Clemmons killed four Lakewood police officers. Police say Clemmons was reaching for a gun that he had taken from one of the Lakewood officers when Kelly fired.

Satterberg says Kelly should be recognized for his courage.
