An Onalaska homeowner shot and killed a man in what appears to be an interrupted burglary, the Lewis County sheriff said Tuesday.
Sheriff Steve Mansfield said a number of questions remain for investigators.
The 58-year-old homeowner was not arrested.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the homeowner’s house has been under construction for several years and he lives in the area. Earlier Monday, he reported that some tools had been stolen, and he decided to stay at the house in case the burglar came back.
When he heard a noise Monday night, he opened the garage door, found a flashlight shining in his eyes and fired. A 56-year-old Morton man was killed.
