MASON COUNTY: Biomass plant opposition gears up

Residents opposed to a proposed biomass energy plant in Mason County near Shelton have scheduled public events and protests as they gather signatures for a recall petition aimed at Commissioners Tim Sheldon and Lynda Ring Erickson, who have voiced public support for the project.

The events include:

 • A public meeting, 7-9 p.m. today at the Shelton Civic Center on Cota Street.

 • A street protest, 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesday outside the Mason County Public Utility District No. 3 office, 307 W. Cota St., Shelton.

Adage LLC, a joint venture between Areva, Duke Energy and John Deere, has announced plans to build a 60-megawatt power plant near Shelton that converts wood waste to electricity. The power would be enough for 40,000 homes.

Critics have concerns about toxic air emissions, water use and traffic impacts from the project.
