A sanitation worker who went to service a portable toilet at a Tacoma Public Utilities transfer station Friday opened the door and spotted what appeared to be a pipe bomb with a fuse sticking out, Lakewood police said.
Had the bomb gone off, it would have caused “considerable damage” to the portable toilet and anyone standing nearby, Assistant Police Chief Mike Zaro said.
The Pierce County sheriff’s bomb disposal unit rendered the device safe and no one was hurt, Zaro said.
The worker discovered the bomb about 9 a.m. in the 5900 block of 75th Street West. She left and called 911. Police set up a safety zone and evacuated a handful of nearby business and a small apartment complex.
