SOUTH KITSAP - Two men robbed a grocery store and beat up its owner and might have also ripped off a coffee stand in the store's parking lot.
The owner of Time Saver Grocery on Mile Hill Drive dialed 911 at about 2:45 a.m. Friday after getting a call from his alarm company, going to the store and finding a broken back door. Two men were inside loading up their pockets with cigarettes and smoking pipes, according to a police report.
The suspects, trying to avoid the owner, tried to break out the front doors with a shovel but couldn’t bust through the metal bars. They ran back toward the back door, where the owner was standing, and he grabbed one of them. He was punched in the mouth but held on, according to the report. Then the other man clubbed him in the back with a wooden object and he let go. A police dog tracked them toward Southpark Apartments, but lost the scent.
The store owner, who had cuts to his lip and mouth and a sore back and shoulder, called 911 again at about 4:30 a.m. to report that the window in McKean’s Caffeine in the store’s parking lot had been smashed. The coffee stand owner arrived and said a large safe that contained $3,000, a cash box with about $200 in change and her video surveillance system were gone.

A deputy, thinking the thieves couldn’t carry all that loot very far, looked around and found the safe and video recorder. The cash box and four video cameras remain missing.
