Asgaard Pass hiker dies

LEAVENWORTH - A 52-year-old Renton man died Friday night after falling about 15 feet from a large rock on Asgaard Pass.

Stephen Grate died at the scene of the accident from a head injury, said Lt. Maria Agnew of the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office. The accident happened about 8:30 p.m. as the man was hiking with his 25-year-old son, whose name was not available.

Grate had apparently climbed a large rock near a waterfall, fell off into a stream below the waterfall and suffered a concussion, Agnew said. When a Forest Service backwoods ranger, who had been alerted to the accident by other hikers, arrived at the scene, the injured hiker’s condition had worsened. CPR was attempted but failed .

A helicopter from Snohomish County flew into the area Saturday morning and removed Grate’s body, Agnew said. Grate’s son and a friend hiked out of the area with a ranger Saturday afternoon.

Asgaard Pass, which is about 10 miles southwest of Leavenworth, is one of the main ways to get to the popular Enchantment Lakes hiking trails.
