Officer's killing now a death-penalty case

King County's prosecutor says he'll seek the death penalty against Christopher Monfort if Monfort is convicted of killing a Seattle police officer.

Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg filed the notice Thursday and said, “The intentional, premeditated and random slaying of a police officer is deserving of the full measure of punishment under the law.”

Monfort is charged with aggravated murder in the shooting of officer Timothy Brenton as he sat in a patrol car on Halloween.

Monfort is charged with the attempted murder of officer Britt Sweeney, who was in the car with Brenton.

Monfort also is charged with the attempted murder of one of the officers who arrested him and the officers who could have been injured in the Oct. 22 firebombing of vehicles parked at a police garage.

Monfort has pleaded not guilty.
