A 23-year-old man shot and killed by a Federal Way police officer Tuesday night has been identified as David Charles Young.
Young, whose last known address was in Tacoma, allegedly led police on a short pursuit before crashing the stolen pickup he was driving into a guardrail. When an officer approached the truck on foot, Young tried to run down the officer, who opened fire, police said.
Young was struck in the head, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, and died at Harbor-view Medical Center.
The incident began when the truck’s owner recognized his vehicle and called police, who tried to stop Young after he got into the truck in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
After Young refused to pull over, officers chased the truck.
The officer, who has been with the Police Department for seven years, has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol after an officer is involved in a shooting.
Young had three outstanding warrants for larceny and a DUI, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the shooting.
