A Buckley man killed himself early Sunday after fatally hitting a bicyclist with a pickup truck in Enumclaw and realizing it was his friend.
Geoffrey M. Godley, 24, was driving south on 228th Avenue Southeast when the collision occurred at 2:10 a.m., the King County Sheriff’s Office said. A second vehicle was passing Godley’s 1992 GMC Sierra 2500 when he hit 20-year-old Steven D. Relford, who was riding a bike south.
Sheriff’s detectives said the other vehicle might have distracted Godley, but they believe alcohol played a role in the incident.
Relford, who turned 20 Saturday, had been celebrating his birthday before he was hit and killed. He was staying nearby with family friends, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
When Godley pulled over and realized he had hit and killed his friend, he shot himself in the head with a shotgun.
Godley’s cousin, who owns the pickup truck, was a passenger in the GMC when the crash occurred.
