Pierce County sheriff's deputies found a 47-year-old man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound early Thursday after an overnight standoff in the Bonney Lake area.
No one else was hurt during the incident and no deputies fired their weapons during the confrontation in the 14600 block of Prairie Ridge Drive East, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
The incident began about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when a woman called 911 to say two men were arguing over a missing iPod. Dispatchers could hear the arguing in the background, Troyer said. The woman also reported there were guns in the house.
When deputies arrived, one of the men fired two shots outside toward the officers and the other occupants of the house, who were standing outside. The shots missed and the man retreated into the house, Troyer said.
The sheriff’s tactical team surrounded the home and nearby roads were blocked off. Negotiators tried to contact the man but failed to reach him. Loud distraction devices were fired into the house, but the man did not come out.
About 3:30 a.m., members of the SWAT team looked inside the home, and saw the man lying on the floor, Troy-er said. They entered the house and found him dead.
Investigators suspect the man shot himself shortly after the standoff began and that’s why the SWAT team was not able to contact him, Troyer said.
An autopsy on the man is scheduled for today.
Investigators suspect alcohol and drugs were involved.
