Trail dedication, vigil to mark deputy's death

Two events will be held today to honor Pierce County sheriff's deputy Kent Mundell, who died a year ago after a shootout with a drunken man at a home outside Eatonville.

A trail dedication will begin at 11 a.m. at Ashford County Park, 29801 state Route 706. The trail system of the in-progress park is being named after Mundell because he was fond of the outdoors.

At 7 p.m., a candlelight vigil will begin in the fallen deputy’s honor at the sheriff’s South Hill precinct, 271 John Bananola Way E.

Mundell was killed after he and his partner responded to a domestic violence call Dec. 21, 2009. They were escorting a drunken man from the house when he opened fire. The 44-year-old father of two died of his wounds Dec. 28, 2009.
