A man suspected of trying to run down a Washington State Patrol trooper after a wild, two-county chase has been ordered jailed without charges until Monday so authorities can build their case against him.
Pierce County Superior Court Commissioner Patrick Oishi on Thursday set bail at $1 million for Alexander F. Parkhotyuk, 20. He is to be arraigned Monday or set free.
Oishi, after reviewing a statement from prosecutors, said there was probable cause for “any number of felonies.”
Authorities believe it was Parkhotyuk, driving a stolen BMW, who led police on a chase Wednesday from South King County to Fife. Once there, he’s suspected of dumping the BMW and stealing another car near the Costco business center on 20th Street.
He then tried to run down a motorcycle trooper who attempted to stop him, authorities said. The trooper fired a number of shots into the car’s windshield but didn’t hit Parkhotyuk, who soon after crashed the second car into a tree.
Troopers said Parkhotyuk was combative and had to be shocked with a stun gun before they could arrest him.
