Lacey Police Officer Ken Westphal's quick actions saved the life of a 16-year-old girl who attempted suicide by jumping from the Interstate 5 overpass on College Street on Tuesday morning, police said.
Westphal responded to a 911 call about the girl about 9:45 a.m. The caller said it appeared as though the girl was ready to jump.
Westphal wrote in his report that the girl stepped over the overpass railing as he approached. He reached her just as she jumped, Lacey Police Lt. Chris Ward said.
“She was in midair; he grabbed her by the back of the pants,” Ward said.
Ward said Westphal both saved the girl’s life and protected drivers on I-5.
"We're proud of him," Ward said.
The girl was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital for observation, he added.
