A 56-year-old man died Saturday afternoon after his hydroplane flipped over on Lake Lawrence near Yelm, Thurston County Sheriff's Lt. Cliff Ziesemer said.
According to Ziesemer:
Devin Mason of Tacoma was participating in a race about 2 p.m. when his 18-foot hydroplane, traveling at about 80 miles per hour, caught air and overturned.
The man later emerged from underneath the boat and waved his arms, but he was unconscious by the time he was pulled into a rescue boat.
Medical personnel already on scene for the race performed life-saving measures as they brought the man to shore, but he later was pronounced dead. The cause of death is under investigation. Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said an autopsy is set for Monday.
There were three other boats in the race.
