Performing arts head stepping down

Tom Iovanne, longtime executive director of The Washington Center for the Performing Arts, is retiring.

The center posted an announcement Tuesday on its website and Facebook page that Iovanne is stepping down at the end of May. Iovanne has been director since 1989, just a few years after the center opened. He’ll remain for a time as an artistic consultant to provide guidance during the transition.

The current director of marketing, Kevin Boyer, will serve as interim executive director while the center’s board searches for a replacement for Iovanne.

Under Iovanne’s leadership, the center expanded its season from five events a year to between 40 and 50, and the center’s budget has grown fivefold.
