Retailing giant Walmart plans to bring a new store to Lacey, making it the second Walmart in the city, fourth in Thurston County and sixth in the region.
The company announced Wednesday that it plans to open a small-format grocery store on a vacant lot at Yelm Highway southeast and Parkside Drive southeast. It also is across the street from Capitol City Golf Club and down the street from Safeway and QFC, likely heating up the competition for both those stores.
The new store is what Walmart calls its “neighborhood market.” It will measure about 42,000 square feet, employ 65 and is expected to open in early 2015. It also will have a pharmacy.
Walmart introduced its neighborhood markets format in 1998 and now operates about 300 throughout the country, including in Bellevue, Lynnwood and Vancouver, Wash.

This will be the second Walmart store in Lacey. The company also has stores in Yelm, Tumwater, Shelton and Chehalis.
“We look forward to continuing our relationships with the community and serving our customers in Lacey,” said Madeleine Havener, vice president and regional general manager for Walmart, in a statement.
Walmart will anchor a lot that recently was approved for more commercial development, Lacey Community Development director Rick Walk said.
In addition to Walmart, Hall Equities Group of California, the longtime owner of the site, will develop four more buildings nearby, ranging from 6,000 to 7,200 square feet, he said.
“It’s nice to see that site move forward,” Walk said.
Hall Equities also was the original developer of the Summerwalk subdivision nearby, but since has sold off the residential piece, he said. Summerwalk currently has 180 homes with another 205 to come.
The new Walmart store will serve that community, as well as other subdivisions in the area, such as Horizon Pointe and Lakepointe.
A temporary hiring center for the new store will open in late fall, and construction is expected to create 50 to 75 jobs, according to a news release.
