Dog dies in Yelm house fire

Firefighters responded to a house fire Saturday in southeast Yelm.

The fire occurred about 2:20 p.m. at a home in the 21000 block of South Terra Lane in the Clearwood Community. Fire units arrived to find the house’s garage engulfed in flames. The fire extended to the first and second floor of the house, according to Bald Hills Fire Department Chief Mark Gregory.

All of the house’s occupants had been evacuated by the time fire units arrived, Gregory said.

A male occupant of the house had suffered burns to his hand while trying to save a dog from the fire. The fire was extinguished relatively quickly, but the dog died in the blaze, Gregory said. He projected that the home was “a total loss” because of the fire damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Southeast Thurston Fire Authority and Fire District 12 of Tenino also responded to the scene.
