Littlerock Road bridge opens Saturday

A temporary bridge on Littlerock Road Southwest south of Tumwater is set to open at 10 a.m. Saturday –- two days ahead of schedule, county officials say.

The Bailey bridge over Salmon Creek near 93rd Avenue Southwest will be one-lane wide, and feature temporary traffic signals so that passenger vehicles, buses and emergency vehicles can travel across the bridge.

Heavy trucks will still need to use a detour route, county officials say.

The structure is on loan from the state Department of Transportation.

“Our friends at WSDOT have been a huge help,” Thurston County Public Works director Donavan Willcutt said in a news release. “This Bailey bridge is really a slice of engineering genius, and the crews worked so fast and so well together, they had it installed and ready to go in no time.”

The Bailey bridge is scheduled to stay in place until July when crews will begin tearing down the permanent bridge which was in danger of collapsing with the weight and stress of heavy trucks, according to a county news release. The new bridge is scheduled to open by the end of the year.
