Chehalis man accused of beating girlfriend's child

A 44-year-old Chehalis man was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly spanked his girlfriend's five-year-old boy to the point where the boy sustained bruising.

James M. Waltenburg was charged with one count of third-degree assault of a child Monday afternoon in Lewis County Superior Court. His bail was set at $10,000.

The boy's injuries included red and purple bruising that covered most of his rear end and purple bruising on his lower back, court documents state. The boy also had small abrasions from where the skin broke from the impacts.

The grandfather of the child noticed the markings on the child and called police on Sunday.

The child told deputies that he "got whooped five or six times" by Waltenburg the previous day and that it hurt, court documents state. Waltenburg admitted to spanking the child because the boy yelled at him.
