High school alumni ‘stars’ to be honored

The Olympia High School Alumni Association will honor three people as distinguished alumni during its Night of Stars event next week.

“There’s a nominating process, and then a committee of alumni considers the nominations,” said association president Charlie Kirry. “These are folks who have been local and have affected a lot of people.”

The honorees are:

 • Brian LeTourneau, an Olympia High School economics teacher and coach. He has worked for the Olympia School District since 1969.

 • Neil Woody, a 1961 Olympia High graduate who is a certified public accountant and business leader in the Olympia area. He serves on several boards, including those for the Thurston County Food Bank and the Thurston County Chamber.

 • Donald Eugene “Gene” Strandness, a 1946 Olympia High graduate who chaired the University of Washington’s Vascular Surgery Department for 25 years. He died in 2002.

Night of Stars is free and open to the public. It will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at Olympia High’s Performing Arts Center, 1302 North St., Olympia.
