Olympia marijuana store applicant hopes for August opening

The city of Olympia has received its first land use application for a potential retail marijuana store.

The owner of Green Lady Inc., who has a license application pending with the state Liquor Control Board, said recently that he hopes to open his store at 3044 Pacific Ave. SE, Suite B, in early August.

Mike Redman, owner of Green Lady, is navigating the public process this summer. The public is invited to ask questions and learn more about Green Lady’s proposal during an informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.

The public comment period ends July 1, and the Olympia Hearing Examiner is expected to make a decision July 28.

“We were trying to be open by July 1,” said Redman, who expressed frustration at the “slow” permit process.

Redman also expressed excitement over the financial possibilities of legal marijuana, especially in the wake of Colorado’s legalization.

“It’s going to be a huge revenue source for the state and taxpayers,” he said. “It’s exciting to be a part of an industry that’s growing.”

As for the name, Redman said Green Lady is “kind of an homage to the plant itself.”

In 2012, Washington voters approved I-502, which legalized recreational marijuana sales for adults. Retail outlets are expected to open the first week of July. The state Liquor Board approved 334 total outlets based on population. Thurston County was approved for 11 retail outlets, with two in Olympia, two in Lacey, one in Tumwater and six “at large” outlets for the rest of the county.

“This is kind of a brave new world for all of us, but we have our first land-use application for recreational marijuana,” City Manager Steve Hall said at Tuesday’s Olympia City Council meeting.

Thurston County’s first licensed marijuana producer-processor license was issued May 28 to business partners Jeff Gilmore, David Brown and Mary McKnew. The Olympian reported this month that the partners will grow the marijuana plants next to Gilmore’s home near Tenino.
