Brush fire burns 5 acres near Bucoda

Fire crews extinguished a brush fire that burned about 5 acres Friday afternoon near Bucoda in south Thurston County.

Multiple fire agencies responded to the fire around 3:30 p.m. and had the fire under control three hours later, according to The Chronicle in Centralia. The newspaper has posted photos showing the crews digging fire defense lines off Tono Road. The Chronicle reported that the fire had burned through a clear-cut area and that 20 inmates were also called to the scene to dig fire lines with crews from the Department of Natural Resources.

A brush fire also burned 1.5 acres Thursday and threatened a residential neighborhood in the 9000 block of 173rd Avenue Southwest in Rochester. No homes were damaged, and the cause of the afternoon fire was unknown, according to The Chronicle.
