Concrete block on train tracks causes fuel spill

A Tacoma Rail train was damaged late Friday by a concrete block on the tracks in Tumwater.

The incident occurred about 9:15 p.m. Friday just south of 49th Avenue Southwest near Trosper Road and the Bonneville power station, Lt. Bruce Brenna of the Tumwater Police Department said.

The train was southbound when the concrete block punctured a fuel tank, causing thousands of gallons of fuel to spill, Brenna said. The Department of Ecology was investigating the spill, which was estimated between 1,500 and 3,000 gallons, Brenna said.

The incident was under investigation by Tacoma Rail. Police had no suspects and were unsure whether the damage to the train was caused intentionally, Brenna said.
