An aging musk ox was euthanized Tuesday after breaking her leg at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.
The 18-year-old animal, called Hasxil, was found lying in her exhibit Tuesday and did not want to stand. X-rays showed a fracture in the femur of her right back leg.
“Repair of the leg was not a viable option due to the severity and location of the break, combined with the animal’s advanced age,” veterinarian Dr. Karen Wolf said.
It’s unclear how the musk ox fractured her leg.

The musk ox weighed about 460 pounds, so each of her legs bore a lot of weight, zoo officials said.
Hasxil was born in 1996 at Oregon Zoo and came to Tacoma in 2008. Musk oxen typically live 12 to 20 years.
Point Defiance has three other musk oxen.
