A 16-year-old driver from Oakville and her 16-year-old passenger from Aberdeen crashed into a black bear Saturday night near Oakville, according to the Washington State Patrol.
About 9 p.m. Saturday, the driver, a girl, and her passenger, a boy, were westbound in a Ford Focus on U.S.. Highway 12, approaching Milepost 38, when they struck a “black bear standing in the middle of the highway,” according to the State Patrol.
The passenger was wearing a seat belt, but it failed to restrain him, according to the State Patrol. He was injured and later flown to Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver.
The driver, who also was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
Trooper Russ Winger said via Twitter on Saturday night that the bear wandered away from the scene.
