Motorcycle rider dies Wednesday night in Tumwater crash

Tumwater police report that a man on a motorcycle died in a crash Wednesday.

The incident occurred at 11:20 p.m. April 1 in the 2800 block of Black Lake Boulevard. The 57-year-old motorcycle rider had stopped in the southbound lane next to a truck that had pulled over to the side of the road, presumably to check on the driver, according to police.

An SUV was traveling southbound and struck the motorcycle from behind, and the rider died at the scene, according to police.

The Thurston County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Jeffrey Barnes of Olympia. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Police report there were no signs of impairment for the SUV’s driver, and that speed was not a factor. The rider was also wearing a helmet. Tumwater police are still investigating the incident.
