Olympia invites residents to compete in water conservation contest

Olympia Mayor Stephen Buxbaum is asking Olympia residents to conserve water throughout the month of April as part of the National Mayors’ Challenge for Water Conservation.

The city with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge will be eligible to win prizes such as a Toyota Prius or home improvement gift cards.

As of Thursday, Olympia was ranked eighth among cities with a population between 30,000 and 99,999. Buxbaum said at this week’s council meeting that he wants to beat Bremerton, which ranks ahead of Olympia at third on the list.

The mayor said the topic of water conservation is timely considering the severe drought conditions in California. “This is an opportunity to engage in a larger conversation beyond our own borders,” Buxbaum said.
