Tumwater to host public hearing on proposed annexation of 1,650 acres

Tumwater City Council will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday regarding the proposed annexation of about 1,650 acres in the city’s Eastside Urban Growth Area.

The hearing will be held in the Logan Room of South Sound Manor, 455 North St. SE. An open house will precede the hearing from 5-6:45 p.m.

The proposed annexation area is roughly 2.5 square miles and is bordered by Old Highway 99 on the west, the Deschutes River on the east, 58th Avenue on the north and near 88th Avenue on the south. About 3,000 residents live in that area, according to the city.

As a result of annexation, the city reports the need to hire six more police officers, four more firefighters and up to eight more city staff in other departments.

The council approved the annexation in January, and the Thurston County Assessor certified the petition to annex in April. The petition required that 60 percent of property owners within the annexation area must give approval. The council is expected to finalize the annexation later this year at a date to be determined.
