Crews will begin installing a basketball hoop and 4-foot fence this week at the Artesian Commons in downtown Olympia.
The city reports that the tiny park at 415 Fourth Ave. — home to the historic artesian well — will remain open to the public during construction. The well itself will be located outside the fenced area and will be accessible 24 hours a day.
Gary’s Garden Gate has been hired to build and install the new fence, and the work will be completed by the end of the month, according to the city.
The project is part of an effort by the city to keep the space clean and safe. The park has been a magnet for complaints and nuisance behavior since it opened last May. The city has been trying for months to reduce inappropriate behavior in the park.
City officials say the fence will allow the city to close the park at night. Other upcoming plans for the park include more lighting, security cameras and posting park hours.
