Two seriously injured in I-5 collision in Thurston County Wednesday morning
A transporter van collided with a semi-truck on Interstate 5 in Thurston County Wednesday morning, according to the state Department of Transportation and Washington State Patrol.
The collision occurred at about 8:23 a.m. on southbound I-5 exit 99 near 93rd Avenue Southwest, according to a Washington State Patrol press memo.
First responders transported two people with serious injuries, Trooper Kameron Watts said via social media. The driver of the van, a 55-year-old Oakville man, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center and Seattle, per the memo. Meanwhile, a van passenger, identified as an 81-year-old Chehalis woman, was transported to MultiCare Capital Medical Center in Olympia.
The memo describes the driver of the semi-truck as a 27-year-old Troutdale, Oregon man who was not injured. No other people were injured or involved.
Witnesses told troopers the van drifted off the roadway and struck the back of a parked semi-truck on the right shoulder, Watts said. The memo indicates the van driver left the roadway as he was taking the exit to State Route 121 and struck the semi-truck.
It’s unclear what caused the collision. State Patrol is still investigating the incident, the memo says, and its unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.
The ramp was reportedly blocked for three hours and six minutes following the collision.
