They dated for a couple years. They even moved in together. But when they broke up last year, he kept her cellphone, documents say.
Her phone has photos of her recently deceased father. Her ex offered her one photo of him back for each time she would have sex with him, according to Pierce County prosecutors.
The 41-year-old Yelm man was arraigned Thursday afternoon in Pierce County Superior Court on one count of first-degree extortion, a class B felony. His bail was set at $20,000.
According to court documents:
The man and woman dated for about two years, ending in October. During the course of their relationship, the man added the woman to his phone plan.
Once they broke up, the man kept the woman’s phone and refused to return it to her unless she paid him “substantial amounts of money.” The phone had many pictures of her father, who had died recently.
The man, an IT worker for the Washington National Guard, changed the woman’s passwords for her social media accounts and her phone’s backup storage so she could not access the photos.
On Monday, the man sent a text message to the woman saying he would return one photo of her father each time she had sex with him, and that he would delete all the photos on her phone within 24 hours if she did not comply.
She said no.
He told her having sex with him wouldn’t be a “big deal” because they had had sex before.
The woman contacted a friend of hers who works with the man, but that friend was not able to persuade him to give up his demands. Instead, the man sent the woman a text saying, “You crossed the line this time.”
So she went to Tacoma police with the text messages, and the man was arrested.
