A car crashed and burned Friday afternoon on the shoulder of Interstate 5 after a police pursuit south from the Olympia area to Grand Mound.

Speeding down I-5 in a 2002 Jaguar, the driver hit a parked pickup truck on the shoulder with no one inside. It belonged to a construction worker who was working on an interstate widening project in the area.

Joseph Decarlo, no town or age available, drove through the construction area in the far right lane behind concrete barriers. When he tried to merge back into traffic, he swerved and hit the parked car. The Jaguar reportedly caught fire for a time.

Olympia police came into contact with Decarlo when they were attempting to serve a drug warrant and he was eventually arrested on those charges, plus felony charges of eluding police.

The incident backed up southbound rush hour traffic for about 45 minutes. There was no other information available as of press time.
