A townhouse fire in Lacey Monday evening that sent a man to the hospital was likely started by a boy playing with a lighter, according to the Lacey Fire Department.
Crews arrived to the scene of a two-story townhouse in the 1700 block of Sulky Drive Southeast after dispatch received a call about 8 p.m. from a woman saying she believed her 4-year-old son had accidentally started a fire in a bedroom closet on the second floor, according to a department news release.
The fire was extinguished in 20 minutes and caused an estimated $35,000 in damage. Fire crews were able to put out the fire before it could spread to the adjoining townhouse.
A man was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and was later transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital for observation.
Investigators confirmed the fire was started because the boy had been playing with a lighter. The case has been forwarded to the district’s juvenile fire setter specialist for follow up.
The Olympia Fire Department also responded to the blaze.
