Police are investigating the death of a man found off of Martin Way on Wednesday morning, according to the Olympia Police Department.
A driver spotted the man in a marshy area near the road at about 9:40 a.m. and called 911, said department spokeswoman Laura Wohl. Officers responded to the scene, located near the intersection of Martin Way and Mary Elder Road, across from the former Bailey’s Motor Inn.
The deceased appears to be a young, black man in his late teens or early 20s, Wohl said.
“There were no obvious signs that the death was due to any crime, but the Olympia Police Department is investigating,” Wohl said.
Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said the man has no injuries that would indicate a violent death, and that his office is still running tests to determine the cause and manner of death.
“We’re still waiting on a toxicology report,” Warnock said. “It doesn’t appear that there are any external injuries that may have caused his death. It’s pretty unlikely that he was hit by a car.”
The coroner’s office may have identified the man, but they’re still waiting on confirmation, Warnock said. He expects the man’s identity to be released sometime Friday.
“We have an idea of who he is but we’re still waiting to confirm the identity with family members,” Warnock said.
