Man accused of trying to get into former Gov. Gregoire’s car as she drives away

Olympia Police arrested a man who tried to get into former Gov. Chris Gregoire’s car while she was driving away.

Police said Gregoire was loading her car with purchases from a hardware store when she saw a man watching her from about 15 feet away.

When Gregoire started to drive away, the man opened her unlocked passenger door. When the man was half-seated, Gregoire accelerated backwards, throwing the man out and closing the car door.

Gregoire called 911 and officers arrested the man as he was trying to get into the store’s recycling bins.

Police said the 47-year-old man appeared to have mental issues or drug impairment. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to be charged with disorderly conduct and endangering others.
