Lacey man suspected of trying to light parents’ home on fire

A Thurston County judge set bail at $5,000 for Steven R. Miller, a Lacey man who tried to set his parents’ home on fire.

Miller, 37, was arrested Thursday night after his mother called 911 and reported that he had poured oil on the garage floor and lit it on fire. She said that when she asked him why, he couldn’t give her a reason, according to court documents.

When a Thurston County Sheriff’s deputy arrived on the scene, he found oil on the garage floor, inside a car that was parked in the garage and in the home’s laundry room. He found two empty oil containers in the garbage can and a charred piece of paper.

The parents told the deputy that their son was suffering from schizophrenia.

Miller was booked into the Thurston County Jail and appeared before Judge Anne Hirsch on Friday afternoon in Thurston County Superior Court. She found probable cause for one count of first degree arson.

She also prohibited Miller from having any contact with his parents.
