A man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault Saturday after hitting a car near state Route 302 in Purdy and injuring the two people inside.
Investigators believe the 26-year-old man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he hit the other car Saturday evening.
The occupants of the second vehicle, a 71-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, were transported to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma with serious injuries. The man and woman were expected to survive, but their injuries were “significant enough to elevate this to a felony charge,” Gill said.
Speed was also a factor in the crash, which occurred at the uncontrolled intersection of Purdy Drive Northwest and Goodnough Drive Northwest, said Trooper Guy Gill of the Washington State Patrol.

The accident left the 26-year-old’s vehicle partially blocking traffic, while flinging the other car off the roadway and into a guardrail, according to the State Patrol.
The 26-year-old driver was also injured, but not severely, Gill said.
Troopers are investigating the incident as a vehicular assault. Gill said the suspect would be booked into the Pierce County Jail on that charge Saturday evening.
