TUMWATER: Richland educator to lead school district

The Tumwater School Board on Thursday unanimously approved a two-year contract worth $158,000 per year with Mike Kirby, who will replace retiring superintendent Terry Borden.

Kirby is the assistant superintendent in the Richland School District. He was a superintendent in the North Franklin School District before he moved to the Richland district.

Kirby’s contract does not have a termination clause.

Borden, who has led the district since 2004, has a salary this year of $150,000. He announced his retirement in the fall.

Kirby earned bachelor’s degrees at Eastern Washington University and got his superintendent credentials at Washington State University.

Kirby has been in education since 1978. He has been an associate high school principal in North Franklin, the Lynden School District’s Title IX director, a bilingual and migrant program director, and a high school science teacher in Ritzville and Republic.

Kirby’s first day in Tumwater is July 1.
