Olympia, North Thurston students qualify for National Math Tournament

About a dozen Thurston County high school students qualified for the National Math Tournament on May 15 in Kansas City, Missouri.

The students recently participated in the state championship round of the math tournament at The Evergreen State College.

“We’re thrilled to have hosted this event on campus,” said Brian Walter, a math faculty member at Evergreen. “It is wonderful to see high school students so engaged with math.”

Here are the results:


Olympia High School first; North Thurston High School, second.

Overall individual winners

Ernest Gu, Olympia, and Vin Somasundaram, Olympia, tied first place; Warren Gu, Olympia, second; Min Choi, Olympia, third.

Grade level winners

Ninth grade: Vin Somasundaram, Olympia, first; Thomas Sui, North Thurston, second; Jasper McAvity, Olympia, third.

Tenth: Warren Gu, Olympia, first; Spencer Johnson, Olympia, second; Raven Lirio, Olympia, third.

Eleventh: Daniel Grimm, North Thurston, first; Jeremy Ong, Olympia, second; Nickan Shabdar, Olympia, third.

Twelfth: Ernest Gu, Olympia, first; Min Choi, Olympia, second; Dan Tran, North Thurston, third.
