Brother, sister killed in separate Seward Highway crashes

The man who died Thursday night in a Midtown Anchorage car crash was the brother of a woman who died July 4 in another car wreck on the Seward Highway near Portage.

Michael VanRoten was 30, and Kimberly VanRoten was 29. They grew up as twins even though Kim was adopted, said mother Linda Harris.

"This is very hard to fathom right now," said Harris.

Anchorage police say Michael VanRoten died in a wreck that closed the Seward Highway at Fireweed Lane for several hours late Thursday.

Detective Rick Steiding says the driver of a pickup lost control while making a turn and it collided with another vehicle. Steiding says the accident remains under investigation, but it appears excessive speed was a factor.
