Hundreds take part in annual ‘Polar Bear Plunge'

Hundreds of people braved the frigid temperatures and the chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean to raise money for Jersey Shore charities.

The Rumson-based Sons of Ireland group held its annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge in Asbury Park on Thursday afternoon. The event drew a diverse group of men, women and children who raised thousands of dollars for various groups, including the Boys and Girls Club of Asbury Park

Some participants took part as individuals, while others formed groups to represent friends with health issues or other needs. But many of them made repeated trips into the ocean, calling it “exhilarating.”

Communities across North America held Polar Bear Plunges, with hundreds participating.
