Record 500,000 received jobless benefits in Washington state

A record number of people received unemployment benefits in Washington state.

The Herald newspaper of Everett reports that the state Employment Security Department expects that by New Year's Eve, more than 500,000 people will have collected jobless benefits this year. That's up from 475,000 last year and 290,000 in 2008.

The benefits paid out this year will total about $4.7 billion, compared to $4 billion last year and $1.2 billion in 2008.
