State Rep. Gary Alexander hasn't given up on trying to save Maple Lane School from closure this year, but he's running out of time.
“We included some language in our striking amendment to postpone the close of Maple Lane School until a cost-benefit study has been conducted,” the Olympia Republican said of legislative maneuvers he tried Monday. “I tried to get support, but I wasn’t able to.”
The failed legislation could serve as another blow for the Grand Mound juvenile detention facility. Last legislative session, it was the House that supported keeping the facility open, while the Senate pushed for its closure.
Alexander said there is still an opportunity to save Maple Lane when the supplemental budget goes to the Senate and returns to the House. Then there’s always the 2011-13 biennium budget, he said.
Maple Lane was scheduled for closure last legislative session by June 2013. Gov. Chris Gregoire expedited the facility’s closure to June of this year.
