President Obama has appointed state Sen. Kevin Ranker and Makah tribal chairman Micah McCarty to the National Oceans Council's newly formed Governance Coordinating Committee.
They are two of 15 members named so far to the committee, and three more are expected. The White House has this site devoted to the council's work. In a news release, Obama's staff said the new governance group is meant to include state, local and tribal people who will serve together "as a key coordinating body on ocean policy issues."
Ranker, a Democrat from San Juan, chairs a natural resources council and has been working on Puget Sound water-quality issues. He said he would work to McCarty is also the Makah tribal council's marine policy and fisheries adviser.The other appointees are from around the country including one Brian Baird – who is not to be confused with our former 3rd district congressman who worked on ocean and climate change issues. As a committee member Ranker's said in a news release that he would "be working to coordinate the implementation of national oceans policy across state and local governments throughout the country."
