Department of Corrections workers are pushing state lawmakers to let them negotiate staffing levels and other safety issues in future contracts.
Sgt. Mark Francis of Larch Corrections Center says workers want a say in how to make their jobs safer. He and others testified in support of House Bill 2011 Monday at a Senate committee hearing.
The Daily Herald says the January killing of corrections officer Jayme Biendl by a prisoner has brought renewed attention to issue.
State officials worry the measure could lead to more costly labor contracts.
The bill passed the House earlier this month, and awaits Senate action.
