The Washington House has approved a bill that would allow private vendors to rent space on park-and-ride lots.
The bill gives the state Department of Transportation and local transit agencies using state money for lot operation the option of leasing park-and-ride space to vendors such as coffee shops.
Revenue from lease agreements would go toward operating costs and then into state transportation accounts.
Supporters say the bill provides more choices for transit users and will bring the state extra revenue.
Opposition Republicans introduced a slew of unsuccessful amendments Tuesday night, mostly focused on concerns that having transit agencies select vendors wasn't consistent with free enterprise.
The bill now returns to the Senate for approval of House amendments before advancing to the governor.
