Time running out to comment on Tacoma Narrows Bridge rate hike

If you want to tell state transportation officials how you feel about this summer’s planned toll increase on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, you’re running out of time.

Three public hearings remain for the public to comment on the rate proposal: the next two Wednesdays (April 15 and April 22) and again May 20, which is the last forum at which people can comment before the state Transportation Commission takes final action.

All three hearings start at 6 p.m. This week’s session is an online “virtual meeting” in which participants can tune in using computer, tablet or smartphone. The next two will be held at Gig Harbor City Hall, 3510 Grandview St.

Under a proposal by a citizen advisory commission, toll rates would go up by 50 cents on July 1 for all methods of payment. The new rates would be $5 for a regular crossing with a Good to Go pass; $6 at the toll booth; and $7 to pay by mail later.

The rates would increase another 50 cents in July 2016.

There are other ways people can comment on the toll increase plan without attending a meeting, such as by sending an email.
